Mental health professionals are anticipating a rise in mental health issues among students following the recent announcement of Higher Secondary Certificate (HSC) Class 12 and Secondary School Certificate (SSC) Class 10 results in Maharashtra. To address this concern, the public health department is encouraging students feeling isolated or depressed to utilize the toll-free mental health helpline, Tele-MANAS.

Tele-MANAS: A Lifeline for Students

Since its inception in November 2022, the government-run national tele-mental health program, Tele Mental Health Assistance and Networking Across States (Tele-MANAS), has supported over 70,000 individuals in Maharashtra. The service is accessible via toll-free numbers 14416 for mobile calls and 18008914416 for landlines, operating from Pune, Thane, and Ambejogai.

Dr. Prasanna Phutane, a consultant psychiatrist with Tele-MANAS Pune, highlighted the program’s effectiveness and the expected increase in calls following the exam results. “We log around 80 to 90 calls daily, and we anticipate a surge now that results are out. We are closely monitoring calls related to academic pressure and will conduct targeted awareness programs to support these students,” he said.

Comprehensive Support Team

The Tele-MANAS initiative is staffed by clinical psychologists, psychiatric nurses, and psychiatric social workers. For severe cases, the helpline refers individuals to the district mental health program for more intensive therapies.

Addressing Mental Health Challenges

The announcement of academic results is a critical period for students, often accompanied by heightened stress and anxiety. By providing easy access to mental health support, the Tele-MANAS program aims to mitigate these challenges and promote mental well-being among students.

Mental health experts urge students and their families to take advantage of these resources, emphasizing that early intervention can prevent more serious issues from developing. The public health department’s proactive approach is a step towards ensuring that students receive the necessary support during this pivotal time.

Conclusion

As exam results bring both relief and stress, the availability of the Tele-MANAS helpline provides a crucial support system for students in Maharashtra. Authorities and mental health professionals continue to work together to address the mental health needs of students, fostering a healthier and more supportive environment for academic success.
