In Pune, Maharashtra, two cases of Zika virus have been confirmed. A 46-year-old doctor and his teenage daughter have tested positive for the virus. Despite their diagnosis, both individuals are currently in stable condition, according to an official source.
The doctor initially developed symptoms such as fever and rashes and was subsequently admitted to a private hospital. Blood samples were sent to the National Institute of Virology (NIV) for testing, and on June 21, the results confirmed that he had contracted the Zika virus. Following this, the doctor’s family members were also tested, and his 15-year-old daughter was found to be positive for the infection.
Symptoms and Transmission
Zika virus infection often manifests with mild symptoms, including fever, rash, red eyes (conjunctivitis), muscle and joint pain, headache, and malaise. These symptoms typically emerge 3-14 days after a person is bitten by an infected mosquito and last for about 2-7 days. It’s important to note that many individuals infected with the Zika virus may remain asymptomatic, making it challenging to monitor and control the virus’s spread.

Risks Associated with Zika Virus Infection
Zika virus is primarily spread through the bite of infected Aedes mosquitoes, notably Aedes aegypti and Aedes albopictus. The virus was first discovered in 1947 in the Zika Forest of Uganda and has since been responsible for several outbreaks worldwide, particularly in tropical and subtropical regions.
One of the most serious concerns related to Zika virus infection is its impact on pregnant women and their babies. The virus can be transmitted from a pregnant woman to her fetus, potentially leading to severe birth defects such as microcephaly, a condition where the baby is born with an abnormally small head and brain damage. Other neurological complications and developmental delays have also been associated with congenital Zika syndrome.
Additionally, Zika virus has been linked to Guillain-Barré syndrome, a rare disorder where the body’s immune system attacks the nerves, leading to muscle weakness and, in severe cases, paralysis.
Treatment and Prevention
Currently, there is no specific antiviral treatment or vaccine for Zika virus infection. Management focuses on relieving symptoms through rest, hydration, and pain relief using medications like acetaminophen. Preventive measures are crucial in controlling the spread of the virus. These include using insect repellent, wearing long-sleeved clothing, and sleeping under mosquito nets to avoid mosquito bites. Reducing mosquito breeding sites by eliminating standing water around homes is also essential.
