In a remarkable medical achievement, Kauvery Hospital in Salem successfully treated a 48-year-old man from Namakkal who suffered a complete traumatic amputation of his right hand. The patient arrived at the hospital on April 26, 2024, at 11 PM, just two hours after the injury, with his amputated hand preserved in an ice box.
Upon arrival, the patient was immediately assessed by orthopaedician Dr. Arun and plastic surgeon Dr. Suresh Kumar. The medical team swiftly prepared for a complex reimplantation surgery that spanned six hours. This intricate microvascular procedure involved Dr. Arun performing the bone fixation and Dr. Suresh Kumar meticulously repairing the soft tissues, including tendons, nerves, veins, and arteries.
Post-surgery, the patient received intensive care in the ICU, focusing on asepsis and wound management. Remarkably, just 14 days later, the patient was discharged, having regained substantial function and form in his reimplanted hand.
Dr. Suresh Kumar, Consultant Plastic and Cosmetic Surgeon at Kauvery Hospital, emphasized the significance of immediate reimplantation following traumatic amputations. He highlighted the importance of preserving the amputated part correctly: in a clean, dry plastic cover placed in an ice box.
“Traumatic amputation, whether of a finger, toe, hand, arm, or leg, is a severe injury often resulting from accidents. Our goal with reimplantation is always to restore the original form and function. This successful outcome is a testament to the dedication and expertise of our team,” Dr. Suresh Kumar stated.
Mr. V. Selvam, Facility Director at Kauvery Hospital, lauded the medical team’s commitment and skill, reinforcing the hospital’s reputation as a center of medical excellence. Senior Medical Administrator Dr. Sundararajan and Medical Administrator Dr. Abirami also expressed their gratitude for the team’s outstanding performance in this challenging case.
The successful reimplantation not only highlights the advanced capabilities of Kauvery Hospital but also serves as an important reminder for the public on the critical steps to take following traumatic amputations. Immediate and proper preservation of the amputated part can make a significant difference in the success of reimplantation procedures.
